After looking into 18 different prefab companies we are 90% set on Summerwood. We had initially fallen in love with the Wee House, but taking into account the cost of delivery and building a foundation, this was going to be way over budget and way too much money to spend for our area.
Plus, Summerwood had this neat online design toy, I mean tool.

The rooms on either end will have access via pocket doors to a 3/4 bath in the middle. Imagine those French doors opening out onto an ipe porch with two steps down to an open green space. And folks ask me if I miss NYC.
The space that we have is actually 10ft. x 32ft. so we’ll probably get two shorter ones and join them, and later down the road throw another one on top.
Their prices include delivery, and there are several DIY foundation options – from patio stones ($) to a concrete slab ($$$) and several options in between. You can get it pre-cut (like a giant lego set) or pre-assembled (all the walls put together for ya).
I can imagine it already – writing, art-making, and music-making in my studio, with a cup of tea, the view of the Upper Yard, the sun pouring in, maybe a nap in the hammock under the pergola. Ah. Better still, our families (who are all far away on the East Coast) and friends will be able to visit, stay as long as they’d like, and be comfortable.
Till then, it’ll be a lot of sweat followed by evenings by the fire. It’s so funny to me how much we can enjoy the yard now, even with it in shambles. ‘Cause it’s ours.
Here’s a list of the other prefabs we’ve considered – all very different. Some of them are a real hoot.
