So, all of the wiring that we pulled out of The Mold House was copper wiring, and we also had all of that busted copper piping that had been wrapped in PVC and duct tape and buried under all of that concrete.
Behold, the implements of destruction.
I used the utility knives to whittle off the wire coating.
The utility knives also helped me get the layers of tape off of the pipes.
We brought the copper to the same place that bought our scrap metal.
They sent us to the small scale…
… and the small small scale.
We get our check in 3 days!

Is that 29 lbs of copper? How much did they pay for it?
29 lbs of pipe and 5 lbs of wire. I think it was $1.99/lb of wire and $1.35/lb of pipe. I’m picking up our check tomorrow – I’ll post a pic!
So, it was $1.75/lb for the pipe. It came to $60.70. Nice!
Next time burn the insulation off the wire. We scrap all the time. You have to figure your time is worth something so don’t waste it on stripping the wire.
We usually take a trailer load a month into the scrap yard and get between 100-150 bucks.
Cast aluminum gas grills are big $$$. Take the guts and put in mixed metal pile and the cast aluminum top and bottom in your pure aluminum pile. A lot of people throw out good metal….it’s like finding free money.
We pick up items as we go about our daily driving.
Plus, it’s recycling. Keep up the good work.
BTW in Michigan it has been as high as 3.60 a lb for copper wire.
Thanks for the info – I certainly think about scrap differently now. When I think of all of the stuff I’ve thrown away – sheesh.
It did take 4 hours to strip the wire. When you’re a rookie you’ve got to learn as you go. Hopefully more experienced folks like yourself will chime in and steer us right from time to time.
