The Conclusion of The Concrete Saga – Part 2 of 5

December 15, 2009 |  by Brooke Tansley

Hello Friday.

Peruse the first four posts here, here, here, and here.
See where this whole project is heading here.

Armand’s aching back begged us to change our sift strategy. All of that bending over to pick garbage out of the ‘crete was taking a toll. We used a busted patio chair to get the sifter higher.

The shovel kept hitting something hard just below the surface. Here’s what I found:

Just as it started to rain, Armand uncovered this:

A THIRD PATIO!!! I was too dumbfounded to cry.

It appears that we also found a stem wall from a prior building with a concrete post hole, maybe for a porch. This slab might have been this building’s front patio.

Whatever this was must predate the Pacific Electric Railway. Our house, built in the 1920s, was home to railway workers, as were the other homes on our street.

We busted out part of the slab…

… only to find this:

A FOURTH PATIO!!! Words evade me.

We loaded as much as we could into the truck. This stem wall and third/fourth patio chunk are just too thick to be pounded out with a sledgehammer. They will have to stay for now and be dealt with after the new year during the site prep phase of our Upper Yard reno.

Wow. To be continued…
