I’ve been watching HGTV, DIY Network, and This Old House for over a decade. I’ve googled my fingers numb. I’ve studied design and construction books, mags, and sites. I should be ready for this reno and in theory, I am.
The issue? I’ve never actually done, well, any of it.
Sure, I’ve painted an apartment. Put up a shelf. Assembled some IKEA furniture. Sewn some curtains. That’s where my experience ends.
Today I heard a radio ad for Habitat for Humanity. I had known about them for years, but I didn’t know about their Women Build program. From their site:
Women Build is Habitat’s volunteer program for women who want to learn construction skills and make a difference by building homes and communities.
Women Build projects are regularly held by Habitat affiliates across the United States, and by Habitat organizations around the world. Women at these builds have furthered Habitat’s home-building mission by helping to construct more than 1,500 houses.
Of course, you don’t have to be a lady to volunteer with Habitat.
I registered today, and can’t wait to get started. I really can’t think of a better way to learn – it’s a win-win. I’ll keep you posted.
Have a Happy New Year!

Volunteering with Habitat is a great way to learn. I’m coming up on my 14th or 15th year of it. It was volunteering with Habitat that gave me enough knowledge and confidence to undertake the design and building of our addition and the kitchen remodel.
15 years – wow! I’m really excited about getting started. I wonder if I’ll meet other folks on the project who are working on their own homes. It’s a great organization – everyone wins.
