… that shall remain a mystery no longer. Do any of these look familiar to you? What are they? And – bonus question – will African Pygmy goats or Nigerian Dwarf goats eat them?

Though I know not what the plants are, I can tell you this much… Goats eat EVERYTHING.
Actually, I’m 75% sure 3 and 4 are Johnson grass.
Mystery solved! Angelina is correct – the grass is Johnson grass. This pretty much rules out getting goats since Johnson grass in hot dry weather contains enough prussic acid to kill cattle and horses (I assume also goats) if it is eaten in quantity. More back-breaking labor in store for us!
I think #1 is a virginia creeper, and #2
maybe a vinca vine.
Martha has it right on #2 – it’s a vinca, often used as a ground cover. Try to get all of its roots when you pull – it’s tenacious and will come back from any little bit left in the ground.
P.S. Hats off to you both for this major cleanup. Coffee table? Christmas tree? Really???
Really, Nathan. Really. My mind has been blown at least thrice daily. We’re up to 5 Christmas trees now.
Vinca. Of course it’s tenacious and we have to get every bit of it out. Of course. AHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much. In a sick sort of way I’m really enjoying it. I get a nice badass feeling. It’ll be so satisfying to be looking at a clean slate.
